UNISCAN LIMITED - BASILDON & DISTRICT BUSINESS AWARDS
MANUFACTURING & PRODUCTION WINNERS

The strengths and continuing successes of Basildon district’s economy were celebrated recently at the glittering Basildon Business Awards.

Sponsored by Basildon Council, the awards are acknowledged as the highlight of the year for the local business community.

Entrepreneurs and their guests formed the high-powered audience which packed the Basildon Towngate theatre for this year’s special black tie event.

All categories were keenly contested and as 2006 winners and finalists in 2007, Uniscan Limited had tough competition from a number of new entrants.

Celebrating 25 years of uninterrupted manufacturing in Basildon Uniscan Limited eagerly anticipated the announcement of this year’s category winner.

The judging procedure involving a written submission followed by a visit from 3 experienced field judges lasting over 2 hours was thorough, comprehensive and challenging.

At the award ceremony presented at Basildon’s Towngate Theatre on Friday, July 11, 2008, Uniscan Limited the Basildon based Walking Frame Manufacturer received the award for Manufacturing & Production from category sponsors Selex Galileo.

At the special black tie dinner ceremony, representatives from 90 local companies vied for 34 final awards in 13 categories. As usual, the results were a closely guarded secret, only being revealed at the last moment. The names of the winners were read out, Oscar-style, from the stage.

Initial applications in the manufacturing & production category were whittled down to just 9 finalists all of whom were invited to the award ceremony.

Facing stiff competition Uniscan Limited came through to collect the award.

Geoff Morris – Sales & Marketing Director, collected the award on behalf of Uniscan Limited.

Bala Mahendran - Chief Executive of Basildon Council, said this years event, the 16th to be held had been a great success. He went on to say that “the status and importance of the awards is growing each year”

The judges commented:
“Uniscan celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, having gone from strength to strength. The company started out with Tom Morris producing walking frames in his garden shed and has now developed into a family business which, to date, has manufactured over 100,000 units sold worldwide. Investment in key manufacturing processes, being innovative to remain competitive and concentrating on design improvements, quality and being customer focused, has led to year on year turnover increasing by 20 per cent. Skilled employees have good work/life balance which allows flexibility in their working hours. This is a company which produces goods that have a huge impact on the life of its clients. This is evident from testimonial correspondence received from customers.”

Geoff Morris, Sales & Marketing Director commented on the award
"This award is a fantastic achievement for the company and our staff. This is the third year we have entered the competition being finalists each year and winners on 2 occasions. In our 25th anniversary year this award really is the ‘icing on the cake’. It demonstrates quite clearly how much effort everyone has contributed. Attention to detail, passion and enthusiasm in all areas, plus a desire for continual improvement are at the heart of our business. The judging procedure was a very thorough test of our business structure and as previous finalists we were measured against our earlier successes making it an even tougher challenge. Receiving such acknowledgement and recognition is a massive boost for the company and its employees”
